Cloudways Review: I Set One Up

What I tested

• A 1 GB Basic server on DigitalOcean, Standard tier, in Bangalore.
• WordPress latest, installed by Cloudways on the Lightning stack.
• MariaDB 10.11, which is their recommended default.
• $11 a month. Started on the three-day free trial with no card entered.

Setup took eight minutes

The wizard is four steps: pick the application, pick the provider and region, size the server, name it. Everything had a sensible default already selected. I changed two things.

Cloudways said the server would be ready in about seven minutes. It took roughly eight. WordPress was installed and running when it finished, with a working URL and an SSL certificate. I did not touch a terminal, configure a web server or install anything myself.

The price on the pricing page is not the lowest price

Cloudways opens its pricing page on the Premium tier, where the smallest server is $14 a month. Switch to Standard and the same 1 GB server is $11. The difference is storage: Premium uses NVMe, Standard uses SSD. Same RAM, same CPU.

I only noticed because I was checking the numbers for another page. Most people will pay $14 without knowing $11 exists.

Real load times

Measured with curl from Pakistan to the Bangalore server, on a default WordPress install of 72 KB with no caching plugin, no CDN and no optimisation. The first request is slow because nothing is warmed up yet. After that it settled at around 0.6 seconds to first byte and stayed there.

This is one server in one location measured from one place. It is not a benchmark and I am not claiming Cloudways is faster than anyone else. It is a real number from a real install, which is more than a spec sheet gives you.

I backed it up and restored it, live

This is the part most reviews skip, because it means doing something risky to your own site. Taking an on-demand backup took about 23 seconds. Restoring the whole application from it took roughly two minutes.

I polled the site every five seconds while the restore ran. Twelve requests, twelve HTTP 200 responses, no downtime at all. One request took 3.4 seconds instead of the usual 0.8, which is the only sign anything was happening. The content was intact afterwards.

The trial ends by charging you

The three-day trial genuinely needs no card. But the two screens disagree about what happens next. The signup step says billing starts once you upgrade your account. The dashboard banner then counts down and says the trial will be automatically upgraded.

Read together, the trial converts on its own. If you are only testing, put a reminder in your calendar for day three and delete the server before it turns into a bill.

What surprised me

• It is not the technical host people describe. There is no server administration for a normal WordPress site.
• SSL was already working on the temporary domain, with nothing to configure.
• The account asked for an email verification code on a new device, which is more security than most hosts bother with.
• Nothing tried to upsell me during the wizard itself.

What I have not tested yet

This is three days of use, not three months. I have not used the staging tool or seen what a real traffic spike does. A support ticket is open but unanswered at the time of writing. I will not pretend otherwise. I will update this page when I have.

The extras also cost money that the $11 does not cover: off-site backup storage is billed at $0.033 per GB, while mailboxes start at $1.50 each per month. Budget for those before comparing the headline against a shared host.

Who it suits

• You want managed cloud without learning server administration — it delivers that.
• You want to pay monthly with no lock-in — $11 with nothing to commit to.
• You want the cheapest possible hosting — shared hosting is still cheaper.
• You want email included — it is not. That is a real gap.
