Bluehost vs Cloudways: Which Is Better for a Small Business?

Bluehost bundles the basics and asks for a long prepayment. Cloudways bills monthly and gives you more server control, but leaves email, domains and some backup costs outside the headline price. The better choice depends on who will manage the website.

The short answer

Choose Bluehost when you want one guided package for a first WordPress website and can comfortably prepay three years. Choose Cloudways when monthly billing, staging and the ability to change server resources matter more than bundled email and a free domain.

The biggest difference is not speed

Bluehost Starter is shared WordPress hosting designed to reduce setup decisions. Cloudways is a management layer for cloud servers. It gives you more infrastructure choices, but someone still needs to understand applications, servers, backups and usage. Comparing only their monthly prices misses that difference.

Bluehost costs less over the first three years

Bluehost's $3.99 monthly headline requires a $143.64 payment for 36 months. Cloudways starts around $11 for each active month, which is $396 over the same period before extras. Bluehost therefore wins this specific three-year hosting calculation, but it also locks in more money on day one.

The picture changes at renewal. Bluehost publishes a $9.99 monthly renewal rate for another 36-month Starter term, making the next payment $359.64. Cloudways does not use a promotional renewal jump for the server in this comparison, although the monthly bill can change if you resize the server or add services.

Do not forget email, domain and backups

  • Bluehost includes a domain for the first year. Its renewal is a separate future cost.
  • Bluehost's Professional Email offer is a one-month trial rather than permanent free business email.
  • Cloudways does not include a domain. Keep it with a registrar and point its DNS to the server.
  • Cloudways Rackspace email is listed at $1.50 per mailbox each month. You can also use another email provider.
  • Cloudways off-site backup storage is billed separately at the published per-GB rate.

Which one is easier?

Bluehost is the easier starting point for an owner building a simple WordPress brochure site or blog without a developer. The domain, WordPress setup and common hosting controls live in one account. Cloudways is manageable, but its server-and-application structure introduces more decisions. That flexibility becomes valuable when a developer manages several sites or needs staging and server-level controls.

What our Cloudways test showed

For our separate Cloudways review, we created a real trial server and deployed a test application. The setup completed in about 8.5 minutes. In our warm tests from Pakistan to a Bangalore server, average time to first byte was 0.62 seconds and average total response time was 0.78 seconds. This proves that configuration worked in that test; it does not prove Cloudways is faster than Bluehost because we have not run a matching Bluehost server test.

The full numbers, including the backup and restore timings, are in the review.

Who should choose Bluehost?

  • A first-time WordPress owner who wants fewer infrastructure decisions.
  • A small brochure site, blog or service business with modest storage needs.
  • Someone who values the first-year domain and can pay about $144 upfront.
  • A buyer who has checked the renewal, email and backup costs before checkout.

Every Bluehost Starter cost, limit and renewal figure, checked against Bluehost's own pages.

Who should choose Cloudways?

  • A business with a developer or technically confident site manager.
  • Someone who prefers monthly usage billing instead of a three-year prepayment.
  • An owner who needs staging or expects server requirements to change.
  • A team already using a separate domain registrar and business email provider.

Evidence boundary

We tested Cloudways hands-on, but not Bluehost. Bluehost plan details come from its official pricing and support pages. We therefore do not name a speed or support winner in this comparison.

Our verdict

For a typical first small-business WordPress site, Bluehost is the simpler and cheaper three-year starting package—provided the upfront payment and renewal are acceptable. For a growing site with technical help, Cloudways offers the more flexible operating model. Pick based on who will manage the website and the complete bill, not the cheapest-looking monthly number.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cloudways better than Bluehost?

Cloudways is better for flexible monthly billing, staging and more server control. Bluehost is generally easier for a beginner who wants WordPress hosting, a first-year domain and fewer setup decisions in one package.

Which is cheaper, Bluehost or Cloudways?

Using the prices checked for this comparison, Bluehost Starter costs $143.64 upfront for its first 36 months. A $11 Cloudways server costs about $396 across 36 months before email and backup-storage extras. The services and billing models are not identical.

Does Cloudways include a free domain and email?

No. Buy the domain separately and use an external email provider or a paid add-on. Include those costs in your comparison.

Can a beginner use Cloudways?

Yes, but it presents more server and application choices than beginner shared hosting. Bluehost is usually the simpler option when no developer will manage the site.

Which host is faster?

We cannot responsibly name a winner without testing matching websites on both platforms. We tested Cloudways successfully, but have not completed an equivalent Bluehost performance test.
